ICP intelligence is working out your ideal customer profile from the deals you actually won, keeping it current as you win more, and scoring the deals and companies it has enough data for against it, with the evidence behind every number.
Most companies write their ideal customer profile (ICP) once, in a workshop, and then aim everything at it: reps, campaigns, ad spend, lead lists and now AI agents. ICP intelligence replaces that guess with a profile built from the evidence in your CRM, and keeps checking it as the evidence changes. The ideal customer profile software that does this derives the ICP from your won deals, not from a slide.
The three tests
A tool or a process counts as ICP intelligence if it passes all three.
- Derived from your wins. The profile comes from your own closed-won deals, compared with the deals you lost. A template, a workshop or a vendor’s generic model of “companies like you” does not count.
- Kept current. It notices when the deals you are winning start to look different from the profile, and the profile can be refitted.
- Shows its working. Every score comes with the reasons behind it. When there is not enough data to say anything useful, it says so.
How it works
- Bring your won deals. Start from a CSV export of any CRM, or connect HubSpot. Closed-won deals and the companies behind them are the raw material.
- Find the patterns. Compare wins with losses to find the attributes that separate them: industry, company size, country, deal value and so on. Many companies find more than one winning pattern, which Telepath shows as separate segments.
- Score your open deals and companies. Open deals and synced companies get a fit score for how closely they resemble the deals you won, where there is enough data to score.
- Put it to work. Prioritise the pipeline, find companies in your CRM that look like your wins, find net-new companies like a winning segment, and brief agencies and AI agents on who you actually sell to.
- Keep it current. As new wins land, Telepath flags when the profile is out of date and you refit it in one click. The gap between the profile and the customers you now win is ICP drift.

ICP intelligence compared with similar things
| What it tells you | Built from | Kept current? | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ICP intelligence | Who you actually win with, and how closely each deal or company resembles them | Your own won and lost deals | Flags when stale; refit in one click |
| ICP template or workshop | Who you believe your customers are | Opinion and memorable accounts | Rarely |
| Lead scoring (rules) | How engaged a lead is, against criteria someone wrote | Rules you set by hand | Only when someone edits the rules |
| Intent data | Which companies are researching a topic right now | Third-party web behaviour | Yes, but it measures interest, not fit |
| Data and targeting platforms (Apollo, ZoomInfo and similar) | Who you could reach | A vendor’s contact and company database | Yes, but they do not know who you win with |
| ICP modelling from a vendor database | Companies that look like a profile | The vendor’s data and your inputs | Varies |
They work well together. ICP intelligence tells you who is worth reaching; targeting tools help you reach them, and intent data tells you when.
Who uses it
- Heads of Sales and CROs, to run pipeline reviews by fit and stop spending time on deals that look nothing like their wins.
- RevOps, to give scoring and reporting a single source of truth for “good fit”.
- Marketing, to build audiences from real wins and see which channels bring in deals that look like them.
- Founders, to see who is actually buying before they hire or raise.
- Agencies, to brief campaigns on a client’s real customers.
Frequently asked questions
What does ICP stand for?
Ideal customer profile: a description of the type of company that gets the most value from your product and is most likely to buy from you. In B2B it describes companies (industry, size, region), while a buyer persona describes the people inside them.
What is ICP intelligence in simple terms?
Finding out who your best customers really are from your own sales data, and checking every new deal and prospect against that.
How is ICP intelligence different from an ICP?
An ICP is a description. ICP intelligence is the process and tooling that produces the description from evidence, keeps it up to date and applies it to the deals and companies with enough data to score.
How is it different from lead scoring?
Lead scoring usually measures engagement (opens, visits, form fills) against rules someone wrote. ICP intelligence measures fit: how closely a company or deal resembles the ones you have won. A highly engaged lead can be a poor fit, and a quiet one can be a great fit, so the two answer different questions.
How is it different from intent data?
Intent data shows which companies are researching a topic. It says nothing about whether they resemble your customers. ICP intelligence tells you who is worth pursuing; intent tells you who might be in the market now.
Is ICP intelligence the same as predictive lead scoring?
No. Predictive scoring tries to estimate the chance that a lead converts. ICP intelligence describes how closely something resembles your past wins and shows why. Telepath deliberately does not forecast.
What data do you need?
Closed-won deals with the companies attached, plus basic company attributes such as industry, employee count and country. Deal value adds a lot. You can start from a CSV export of any CRM, or from HubSpot.
How many closed-won deals do you need?
Telepath needs at least 10 closed-won deals to run an analysis. Between 30 and 500 gives the sharpest results, and below roughly 50 you should treat the patterns as directional. A good tool tells you when the data is too thin rather than showing confident numbers.
Can you have more than one ICP?
Yes, and many B2B companies with a few years of wins do. Two or three distinct winning patterns (for example, agencies and software companies) are common, and merging them into one profile blurs both. Telepath groups your won deals into segments, as many as your data supports, so each pattern is shown separately.
How often should an ICP be updated?
Check it at least every quarter, and whenever something changes: a new product, a new market, a new channel or a run of unusual wins. ICP intelligence makes the check routine.
What is ICP drift?
The gap that opens between the ICP you wrote down and the customers you are actually winning, as your product, market and channels change.
How do I check if my ICP is right?
Put your written ICP next to your last 18 to 24 months of wins and see what share match it, then compare wins with losses.
What is account prioritisation?
Ranking target accounts and open deals so the team works the best ones first. ICP intelligence gives it a basis in evidence: rank by resemblance to the deals you have won.
Does ICP intelligence replace Apollo, ZoomInfo or Clay?
No. Those tools help you find and reach companies. ICP intelligence tells you which of them resemble the customers you win with, so the two do different jobs.
Does it work with HubSpot?
Yes. Telepath Pro connects to HubSpot, scores your deals and companies, and writes its own properties back to your records, such as the T-Score on deals and the fit score on companies. It only writes its own telepath_ properties and never deletes anything in your CRM.
Can AI agents use it?
Yes. Telepath has a Claude connector (MCP) that lets assistants such as Claude query your ICP, your scores and the reasons behind them, so an agent works from your real wins instead of a guess.
Is my data used to train anything or shared with other customers?
No. We do not use your uploaded business data to train AI models or share it with other customers. Each workspace’s patterns are built from that workspace’s own deals.
What does it cost?
The ICP report is free. Telepath Pro is one plan at £199 a month, with the first month £1 for new customers, and you can cancel any time.
Who coined the term ICP intelligence?
Several companies now use the phrase. Telepath Pro uses it to mean the three tests above: derived from your wins, kept current, and showing its working.
